“At classes, teachers would tell us that ‘Hillary Clinton became very rich working for Amway. China secretly supports our industry, as Amway is so successful earning Chinese people’s money. Our country wants us to be the No. 1,’ ” Wang says.

In 2007, Wang became a mid-level manager in the Heavenly Lion pyramid scheme in Zhejiang province. The operation was raided last month by police.

Wang Hao welcomes the crackdown but says more should be done.

“It’s not that hard to find pyramid sales, as these groups are large, and neighborhoods realize they are doing strange things,” he says. “But the victims must be given psychological support and help to find new jobs. They believe they can make money, and many will try to find another scheme,” he says.

Taiwan opposition DPP criticizes police protection of Amway China visitors – Taiwan News Online

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The opposition Democratic Progressive Party on Monday accused police of treating Taiwanese people like hooligans by their excessive protection of Amway China visitors.

The Chinese branch of the U.S.-based direct sales company is sending up to 12,000 of its agents and employees on nine incentive cruises to Taiwan between March and May in the biggest-ever such event since the opening of direct shipping links last year.

The police set up a special task force to work out how to accompany the Chinese visitors, while no such precautions were taken when a separate group of wealthy Japanese women visited Taiwan, said Hsu Chia-ching, a DPP member of the Taipei City Council.

For the six Amway groups which already visited Taiwan, police mobilized a total of 441 officers to stand guard outside the restaurant where the Chinese had lunch, Hsu said.
